The study of past events

History is defined as the study of past events and especially those relating to particular places or subjects. My particular place is Oshkosh and the subject is the history of a long-standing dental practice.

My name is Timothy T. Ryan D.D.S. the third-generation owner of a dental practice that dates back to 1930. The founder was Dr. Rexford Stearns Sr. who opened his practice in the historic First National Bank Building at 404 North Main Street in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. The building opened in April of 1927 and served as the professional location for most dentists, physicians and attorneys for many years. Dr. Stearns’ proficient skill and artistry drew patients from all over the country including top Mercury Marine executives and prominent Oshkosh business owners and their families. He was truly ahead of his time. I still treat patients in their eighties and nineties that have beautiful gold restorations that were done by him seventy years ago. It is like looking at history in someone’s mouth.

Dr. Stearns transferred his practice to the second-generation owner, Dr. Michael Weinzierl, an Oshkosh native who absorbed the teachings of Dr. Stearns and continued the practice of quality and artistic care for his patients. He was a very compassionate man who was involved in the Oshkosh community and practiced for approximately thirty years in the same location.

I had the opportunity to obtain the practice in 1994. Dr. Weinzierl stayed for over a year and helped by passing his dental knowledge and skills to me. More importantly, he helped me acclimate to his patients and to the people of Oshkosh. I am not an Oshkosh native like my predecessors so his kindness was invaluable. I am deeply grateful to him and his wife Kathy for allowing my family to carry on the legacy.

After practicing for eight years in the First National Bank Building, the continued growth of the practice necessitated the need to build a new state-of-the-art dental office on the west side of Oshkosh at 2200 Omro Road near the highway. My wife Sue Ann and I have been in Oshkosh for 25 years. Our daughter Meghan was born here and our son Patrick was one year old when we arrived. We truly feel like our roots are here and are happy to call Oshkosh our home.

Oshkosh is rich with its history of water, lumber, boating, aviation and ancient Indian heritage. We are proud to be a part of it and wanted to share some of the history with all of you.
