Scaling & Root Planing –
Fight and Protect Against Gum Disease

Scaling and root planing is a powerful restorative dental procedure that gives the teeth a deep clean. By removing bacteria and debris from below the gum line and smoothing out the roots, it is an effective treatment for periodontal disease.

What Does Scaling and Root Planing Involve?

During your scaling and root planing appointment, our hygienist will scrape and clean away the plaque, tartar, and bacteria below the gumline. We will then smooth out the rough surfaces on the roots of the teeth. This allows the gums to attach securely to the teeth, helping to prevent plaque and bacteria from collecting again.

Who Is Scaling and Root Planing For?

Scaling and root planing is recommended for anyone with gum disease, whether it’s mild gingivitis or more severe periodontitis. If you have any form of gum disease, it’s important to have scaling and root planing done to avoid further complications.

Is Scaling and Root Planing Painful?

Scaling and root planing requires local anesthesia, so you will not feel any pain during your appointment. You may experience minor swelling or tenderness in the gums or at the injection site after the treatment, but this can be managed by over-the-counter pain relief.

Does Scaling and Root Planing Require Special Aftercare?

Following your scaling and root planing appointment, there are a few steps you can take to minimize irritation and inflammation:

  • Avoid very hot food and drinks for a couple of days
  • Avoid crunchy foods for 3-4 days
  • Brush your teeth gently and thoroughly until the swelling and irritation subsides
  • Rinse your mouth with warm saline 4-6 times a day to promote recovery

What Are The Benefits of Scaling and Planing?

Scaling and planing has many benefits, including:

  • Surface stain removal, resulting in a brighter, cleaner smile
  • Combating gum disease, and reducing the likelihood of developing further health complications
  • Improving or curing bad breath caused by bacteria in the mouth
